Coin Collecting Merit Badge |
BEFORE the WORKSHOP - do the following pre-requisites for those seeking the merit badge (Boy Scouts):
- Bring a filled out Blue Card
- Come dressed in your full Class A uniform
- Read the current edition of the Coin Collecting Merit Badge book. Requirements are available online, but reading the book is required. Bring your Coin Collecting Merit Badge pamphlet (a shared copy is okay). Please note - the coin collecting merit badge pamphlets changed a few years ago, if the requirements in the pamphlet do not mention the 50 State Quarter program (requirement 6) then the book you have is too old for reading to prepare for this merit badge. The most current pamphlet is copyright 2008 - and this is the right pamphlet for completely accurate requirements information.
- Bring five coins with different amounts of "wear" as examples of five different grade examples of the same coin type (requirement 3). For instance - bring an uncirculated Lincoln cent, a tarnished "almost uncirculated" Lincoln Cent, an extra fine "a little wear" Lincoln cent, and two more Lincoln cents with fairly notable or substantial wear from circulation.
- Bring 5 different “State” quarters (1999-2008), collected from circulation (the quarters do not have to be of the same year), to meet requirement 6.
- Bring a set of currently circulating coins (one penny, one nickel, one dime, one quarter, one half dollar and one dollar coin). For each coin, be able to locate the mint marks, if any, and the designer’s initials, if any. This is for requirement 7.
- Bring a collection satisfying requirement 9 – if you are not sure you want to do 9a-c, we encourage 9d: bring a date set of a single type since the year of your birth (this is a set of a single type of coin (such as all nickels, all pennies, all quarters) consisting of one coin from each year since the scout’s year of birth. If you were born in 1998 - you would bring a 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. It would be nice to have a new 2010 coin if you can. 2010 coins may require a trip to the bank, but they should be available well before the workshop. They should be arranged neatly in some type of display.
- The remaining requirements (see Coin Collecting Merit Badge) will be completed at the workshop (it is okay to do them in advance of course).
- Every boy prepared per the above items, will be able to leave with a completed blue card (signed by a registered Merit Badge counselor). Others may end with “partials.”
In addition to the opportunity for Boy Scouts to earn the Coin Collecting Merit Badge, we will also learn about coins and qualify for: Eagle Scout and Adult Volunteers needed to help with - We are looking for help with people on the day of the workshop to help during the workshop.
